CPU - which is best?

Hey,

I need a new computer, and, I was looking at the CPU's.

I need advise on which CPU to get.

The system will be used for games, and movies alike. Basicly, anything to do with large grahpics consumption/memory.

So, is it better me getting a
P4 3.0 Ghz 2MB Cache

Or

AMD Turio 64 Mobile ML37 2.0GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache

BTW

How much of a diference does 1 gig RAM make vs 2 gig RAM?
I know thats a big difference, but, can you really notice the speed difference?

Is the Intel P4 3ghz model for a laptop? The AMD64 Turion Mobile ML37 is. With a larger amount of ram you won't always notice any difference in speed. It oftens increases stability when going to run larger applications and games having the increased resources there onhand. When running a dual channel board which most are at this time the increase in ram will compensate for the amount taken by the system itself for basic functions.
 
OH. Ok.

The P4 is a desktop processor. The CPU's are that presented in two different Alienware Laptops.

So, If I got the AMD Processor and gave it a nice big chunk of RAM, there shouldnt be a problem?

With my current computer, I didnt have a big enough CPU to run FEAR, so, thus, it didn't work, but My brothers Laptop, his didnt have enough on the CPU, but, it still ran FEAR, even though the CPU was worse than the min specs.

So, If i was getting 2 gig of ram for either CPU, I pretty much wouldnt notice the difference in speed would I?
 
the P4 is usually used in desktop's,. due to the large power consumption... now, you can put it into a laptop, sure, but the battery wont last very long when the system is under load :)
 
Laptops as a rule were never intended for extended use over long periods even though most will run them on ac adapters. You will notice that there is a separate line of cpus intended for mobile/laptop application. Those are designed for a lower power consumption to increase battery life.
 
Whether it be a laptop or a desktop, the GPU is a key consideration for gaming performance. What's included with those models?

The gpu is a consideration even for non gaming application like multmedia. A desktop obviously gives you a far better edge there while custom ordered gaming laptops are sure to have some top model cards in them.
 
As Ceewi said, it depends greatly on the CPU.

However I would go with the Turion, because the P4 line was known for it's "gaming power", and they often cause heat issues in laptops, since they produce so much and use so much power.

What ceewi1 said what that the "GPU" or "VPU" meaning graphics processing unit was the key not the central processing unit "CPU". He was referring to the capability of the video card in things like pixel pipelines and memory not cpu speed. Although I can say when going from an XP2600 to the XP3200 on the last board anyone could see quite a jump there. It often comes down to a combination of things to see a real performance gain however.
 
The best cpu? Probably the new quad core core2duo E6700 (dono the name of it..lol) :)

And the P4 3.0ghz processor is pretty outdated compared to the new one.

What's your budget for this processor?
 
Well, seeing as I just replied to this, and, I lost the reply because it claimed i "hadn't" logged in, I'll sum up what I said.

Simple, i am need an:

Alienware area 51m 7700

I need the system to be fast, very fast, lol, and I need it to have a very good graphics capability for both games and videos.
I can always choke the thing up with heaps of RAM, but, I'm just worried if the processor doesnt have enough gig's on it, will it still run things that exceed its requirements?

Feel free to customise the Alienware Laptops i mentioned above if you like, then, let me know what you get =D

My budget is fairly loose, i have one of 6,200 USD, but, I need to get two (2) identical laptops for that price, so, it complicates things slightly. :)
 
Hey, I noticed no one replied to my previous post. I guess, All I really want to know is, will this chip (AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile ML34 1.8GHz 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache) run FEAR and OBLIVION perfectly? If my system is decked out for speed, is this processor adequate, because, it starts to get very pricy up from there.

The processor is decent, but I wouldnt say it would run it perfectly.

It really depends on the GPU and how much RAM the computer has as well.
 
for a laptop get centrino duo. lol
i play both FEAR and Oblivion, and you'll definitely want a 7200rpm hard drive... if you can get a lappy with one..
get a proc thats 2ghz or higher... definitely. you'll need it for those games. dual core would be beneficial too, and it wouldnt use up any extra battery life really.
and a good video card if you can sacrifice the battery life.

Or a Core2Duo, which uses a bit less power than the core duo.

And, if I return from the US with two in the Box PC's... I think customs may say.. Hey, heres your traxation invoiices... 1K each. then i say... Crap. :D Also, I need the laptop for Lanning =D
