Dell D400 slow after formating

So my old dell d400's hard drive broke so I had to replace it and re-install windows. Before the laptop broke it wasn't extremely fast but I could browse the web, and watch videos at 720p with no problems. After I replaced the hdd and re-installed windows (it's win xp pro 32bit) the laptop works awfully slow and it can barely launch any web browser... it also lags on videos at 320p! Can anyone tell me why this happens and how I can fix it? Also is there any way I can fix it w/o re-installing windows again?

Any better ideas, I'm pretty sure the hdd is not broken because first of all windows works, second of all it was given to me by a guy who is a professional computer service man and even installed by him... so anyone have any more rational ideas?

Actually it might be cause I think the laptop has 1gb of ram and dxdiag now for some reason shows only 512mb... how can I fix this?

Yep, the drivers were updated but I'm running a malware check as I write this post and it has already detected 4 objects... I hope removing them will help.
