I have a disk drive which does everything in one. It can read and write CD's and DVD's however recently if I insert a CD, it either reads it very slowly, shows it as empty or doesnt even realise its there. If you go into the help supplied with Windows XP Home, it talks about different types of hardware which really isnt my field.

What brand and model do you have? Because a normal dvd-rom is read only. If you can read/write cd's and dvd's, you've got a dvd burner.

Also, you can check your ide settings. Make sure they are set to DMA. And maybe cleaning the disc.
