F.E.A.R. director's edition - BIG PROBLEM!

i got the dvd version, installed it 5 times, and every time the game starts to load i get this error and the game crashes. it will not work, and this computer is brand-new. i can't return the game because i've opened it. i don't know what to do??

It looks like the game is unpatched, is that correct? Perhaps see if there is a patch (should be) and if that fixes the problem.
 
what are your system specs? Very important that you share them.

i have no idea if it's unpatched? what sort of patch would i be looking for?

Then it is unpatched, Patches are bits of software that add either functionality or fixes to a game. You can find the latest patch here Download "FULL Patch 1.08" and install it.

Because your system is new, there is a chance that your drivers are not necessarily up to date. Please do post your system specs once you get the chance.

the computer is new, but i'm reusing my old HD, which has windows xp. i have never had any problems there and always keep my HD clean, etc. i am installing the game to my 80gb hd though, although windows is on the 40gb one, simply because the smaller one is pretty full.
 
Well the system specs look resonable. You have updated all the drivers? patched the game?

When you installed your old Hard drive, you re-installed windows on it?

Edit:

You mention the windows HD is pretty full. Is there enough room for a respectable swap file? How much room is on the windows drive?

i did not reinstall windows on my old HD. i have not patched the game yet (i'm at work now), but even without the patch, it seems VERY odd the game would not work at all, no?

the windows HD has about 12gb free, but it's partitioned half/half, and the partition with windows has 6gb free. FEAR needs like 5gb+.

i don't know what you are referring to as a swap file...i'm not terribly computer savvy, just know how to build them and know some of the lingo, haha.

No, not really odd at all... considering Windows was not a clean instal on a new system. Correct me if I'm wrong, Windows was installed on another system then the Hd was eventually transfered to the new computer without a fresh windows install?

When building a new PC you should always re-install windows. In rare cases you can take an HD out of another computer and still have windows work. Even more rarely does it work perfectly. I do not know if this is the problem, but I would suggest it is certainly a possibility.

So If I'm correct. I would recommend that you do a fresh install of windows. Your other PC's specs were most likely different enough were it is warranted.

yes, you are correct.

damn, do i need to reformat the current windows drive, or can i just re-install windows? it had to reactivate itself when i installed all the new components, and it said it was reactivating because system components changed. i assumed that was good enough.

old specs were athlon 1600+ cpu, 512 pc2100 RAM, geforce 3 ti500 agp.

You could just reinstall, but I'd recommend reformatting and reinstalling. If you need some of those files, back it up to another comp/HDD
 
Personally, I've never re-installed without first formatting. Just the way I like to do things. I'd back up on your 80 gb drive (if you have the space). I have a few HD's and I normally just drag files I want to keep onto another drive, I then drag it back after a clean install. Or if you have a DVD burner, you can hold allot on a few DVD's.
