File Corruption

My computer’s C: (boot) drive has lost thousands of files over the past week. The files affected are mainly MP3’s but others are affected also. The file names, dates, and extensions are turned to gibberish, and the files are not able to be deleted or moved. I am running Windows 98 SE.

I have run diagnostics on the hard drive and everything checks out fine. There is a second partition on the drive which has had no problems.

I have moved the drive into the slave position and installed a new boot drive after some critical windows files became corrupted and would no longer allow the computer to boot.

Does anyone know what can cause such a corruption? I run anti-virus as well as various spy-ware SW packages. Is there anything that can be done to recover the lost data? The main concern is avoiding such an occurrence in the future. Thank you.
