Forced shutdown on laptop?

Last night my laptop got stuck and all the windows I had opened were not responding. I couldn't even restart it or put it in hibernate mode. So I had to keep the power button pressed for 3 seconds (more than usual) to force the shutdown.

Is it unhealthy for the laptop? What could I have done instead?
(The laptop was on battery. The OS is WIndows 8. Laptop is Acer Gateway).

That isn't uncommon. Computer froze up totally and thats really your only way to shut down. Were you running more programs than usual? Or running something while downloading or installing something else?

No. I wasn't downloading or installing anything. I was watching a Youtube video and just when the screen-saver was about to start, I suddenly moved the move and that's when the computer froze.

It isn't the best way to shut your laptop down but if it's totally frozen and unresponsive it may be the only way. If at all possible you should do a shutdown.

Windows 7 seems to be much more tolerant of being shutdown like this than XP was.

Right click on C: (drive address below is just an example) and select properties. Then restart and let it finish.

When it finishes, enter windows and go the START and type

cmd

right click on command prompt in the menu and select Run as Administrator

type in the console (with the space):

sfc /scannow

let it finish.

I wouldn't worry about it, this happens to all computers at some time or another. As others have said though you don't want to shut it down this way unless it's absolutely necessary, as data could become corrupt.

I checked it and no errors were found.

Too much forcing shut down might eventually lead to Disk failure, watching you tube movies for a long time on Laptop with low memory might result in Freezing, when this happen you may tried disconnecting from the internet if you're using modem or cable. remove the cable or modem from your computer and wait for sometimes for the computer to come up and if doesn't best option is to force shut down, but after forcing shot down make sure you run check disk as explained above
