General email question

Hello

Is there anyway that an email can be sent from yahoo or hotmail and set it so that you know if the recipient has opened the email?

Thanks

Mark

Can it be done with other email systems?

Where I work you can do it but when you do, the recipient has a message which pops up asking them to state that the email has been read.

These always irritate me when I get these because it makes me feel as though Big brother is watching me and I don't want to make other people feel that way if I can help it!!

So if there's an email system where I can see if someone has opened an email without them getting that pop up message then that would be great!!

markp - I believe the pop up box to which you refer is found in Outlook 2003 and this is the only place I've seen this too. I have configured Outlook to be my default mail handler on my home PC and, if I set this to request a read receipt, then anyone who reads it using a POP3 email service (such as Yahoo!, Hotmail, etc) will send me a receipt, without getting the pop up...

I do hope this helps.

Thanks sweetcheeks :-)

I have MS Outlook 2003 on a home PC but I haven't gone through the start up process.

I haven't done this yet because I'm worried about choosing the wrong option which might then prevent me from using it in the way I want to.

For example, when it says would you like to configure an email account, I'm already lost!!

I know this is asking a lot but can you tell me what options I need to select to be able to create my own Outlook address which automatically requests read receipts?

Thanks

Mark

Setting up Outlook 2003

Hi Mark,

Having already installed and launched Outlook, what you will need to do is (assuming the program hasn't already prompted you to set up an account):

Access Tools > Email Accounts

Select Add A New Email Account

Select Option Box next to POP3 (Yahoo! and Hotmail both use this format)

User info:
Your Name (how you want your name to appear in the 'From' line for your recipients
Your email address (fairly self-explanatory)

Server Information:
Incoming Server (POP3): for me, this is pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Outgoing Server (SMTP): for me, this is smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk

For the above information, you will need to access your email server's Options menu to find the accurate details.

Logon Information:
Username (the username you chose when setting up your email account)
Password (as above for the password) - I always check the box to Save this Password...

Once you have completed this information, hit the 'Test Account Settings' button - this will check the information and send a test message from and to your email address. If you get this message, it's worked :)...

If not, post again and we'll check the other settings...

Good luck!

Ben

I have MS Office Outlook 2003 on my work email. Can I send someone who works for a different company an email and be able to check they've opened it without them getting the pop up box at their end even if they have MS Office Outlook 2003?

Thanks

if they have outlook at there end they may receive the popup, it depends how they have configured there setting...nothing you can do to effect that unfortunately.

You see, the problem is I accidentally spammed someone from my yahoo account... I don't have a contact number although I still have the email address to hand... I thought if I emailed them then I may not get the reply because of spamming them.

On top of that, they may not even WANT to reply anyway because they may be thinking I was ignoring any emails I sent them since the accidental spamming...

What a complicated saga it is!
