Half Life II and Gamepad

Hi!

I've been trying like a mad man to get Half-Life II to work with a gamepad.

Now I realize that the "true" way to play PC games is with a mouse and keyboard, but in this case I've got my PC hooked up thru S-video to my television and just want to play with the joystick while lounging on my couch (Wireless keyboard and mouse is a bit pricey for me at this juncture.) Also I've been playing the Halo series for so long that I'd really, really just prefer to use a controller for HL2.

There is no native Joystick control in HL2. I am interested in re-mapping an Xbox 360 controller for windows (MadCatz Microcon) to emulate a keyboard using JoytoKey, but I've encountered a problem where I cannot get both analog sticks to work properly. Also, I don't know what codes correspond with each button on the controller, so I can't setup the remapping properly (IE, right trigger to shoot)

Could someone please take the time to possibly give me (and many others who are interested) step by step instructions for setting up an Xbox 360 controller to work with HL2 PC with a default Halo 2 controls setup?

I can't give you instructions on remapping the controller, but I just wanted to ask a question... Is $40 too much to spend on a wireless combo, because you can get a decent wireless combo for that or less depending on if it's on sale...
