Recently one of the heatsinks on my motherboard fell off (lol ), and i'm trying to restick it back on with heatsink compound. Is there any particular method i'm meant to follow? Am i meant to remove the existing compound in some way?
Which sink are you referring to the chipset or cpu there? Hopefully nothing broke in the process like a retaining clip. For cleaning off the old paste now needed you will need some denatured alcohol and something non abrasive but non linting so you don't leave naything on the surface after seeing the old paste removed.
If the sink was secured on with a retainer or fastener that would need replacement since the paste by itself is simply to fill in a thin gap not to hold something on. In the meantime cleaning off the old stuff to see a fresh application of whatever you use is kind of a must there.
Umm i think its the chipset one, the northbridge im guessing.
Theres two clips on either side of the heatsink and they don't appear to be broken, however i have no idea how to attach it back on. Will methylated spirits do the trick?
Used sparingly. The idea is not to see any chemical traces of any cleaning solution left on the surface that could interact with the fresh application of the thermal paste or compound used.
Study those clips carefully while those shouldn't be any major problem since they were found intact. Some can be a little awkward like seen with the retainers for heat sinks where you will probably need the correct hand tool in order to see them put back on correctly.
What make and model board is this being seen on? I'll see if I can find some photos for a closer look to see how those are put on.
Ok, just checked out the clips on the heatsink, there don't seem to be anything for me to clip it onto. There's also something loose somewhere in my tower when i lift it up and turn it around I don't think its possible now...
Ouch! That loose piece sounds like the item you are missing to clip onto might have broken off on you there. I couldn't find any information on that model here instead seeing results like pesticides. So that doesn't help either.
You see where the two come up from the board with some type opening for the opposite end of the clips themselves. Some are not clips like you would see for a stock hsf but more like a straight pin type that thread down into a hold down of some type.
In the mage here look in the center where you see the small hand between both sinks to get an idea of what you are looking for there.
