Ok,
I play COD2 all the time, Ive always had a ping of 40-80, pretty low for me, well I went to a friends house for a LAN party and He has dial-up because, he lives so far out, well it was generally just us playing but we did connect to the internet a few times, well I come home today, and my ping is like 150, I have no idea why it is this high, but I cant join games, because of it saying that this server is for low ping only...so anyone got any suggestions?

the further away the server is the higher the ping also if you are using a peer tp peer program like limewire make sure it isnt running if it is running it will cripple your ping, sometimes your ping can be high because of the amount of traffic your service provider is having .
i play cod uo on a friday night around 8 england time on a canadian server and my ping is around 155 perfectly playable try his server its captain slidercornhole codpeice it has cool maps and a sprint mod if you come on look out for hush little baby and helmutt strapp

I bet your rate is all screwed up from being on Dial up. What is your rate set at? Type rate in to console and report back.

Should be about 8000

Theres not much you can do bout ping cos it depends on how far away is the server. But I found out that my ping isnt constant all the time. somehow.

Ping = the ammount of ms the signal needs to get from your pc to the server and back iirc.. so you cant really do much about a ping.

its how long it takes to send/receive packets from the host to the client. More than likely you had a slower connection due to whatever bandwidth problems you are having

You guys have no idea what you are talking about. If his ping was usually at 40-80, and now it is 150 after coming back from a friends house with dial up, then there is something going on. As to what exactly, I am not sure.

It could be caused by a plethora of problems, with a lot of the problems being out of the user's control. There is no way to really tell with out going through a long troubleshooting process.

I play CS source from time to time and my ping varies from 15 to 100 on my favorite servers. This has nothing to do with my machine, its all network problems on either ISP, Server, etc and is out of my control.

ok, sorry for not posting back in a while.....I actually fixed the problem last night, I went and done a dhcp release and then a renew, because, I had read on google, that this sometimes fixes the problem, well I joined the exact same server I was getting 150 on, and now Im down to around 55 :D, I have no idea why that would have fixed the problem, but it did..

This would mean the problem was stemming from your DHCP server (aka your router, or your ISP whatever you have set up). I still say it was just some bandwidth issues, perhaps a congested router on your ISPs end.

tlarkin thats a definate possibility about the router on my isps end, but if that was the problem, then why would it have changed as soon as I renewed my DHCP?

Coincidence, or perhaps it got routed to a different subnet, so you got a different IP, or.....

who knows really I don't work for your ISP lol:confused:
