How does the whole Steam account thing work?

I have never been a gamer and I recently decided to try out some games since it is fun to play off and on. So, I bought half-life 2 and installed it and I got my Steam account and the whole bit.

I started playing it (keep in mind I have NO clue about games) and I never figured out how to get out of the courtyard. It's a bit frustrating when you don't have a clue what to do.

Anyway, maybe someone can give me tips on that, but I did want to ask....... if I decide I don't like the game and I want to sell it on ebay..... what happens with my account? Will they think I am illegally distributing the game? Do I just go to my account and remove that game from my list of games? If I do that, can I one day put it back if I buy it again once I am more experienced?

Thanks for the help.
PS - I am computer literate, just not game literate. ;)

You cant legally sell it. You buy it and it is yours, forever. You remove it from your list, and then can re add it... as your account shows it as being purchased.

Oh, that's good to know. I guess it's mine forever - oh well. Maybe I just need to learn to play it better to enjoy it.

So, could I have installed it, but not added it to my account? Could you then sell it? Or would I not be able to play it without being logged in to my account with it on my list?

And is that the case when selling games in general or only with Steam games?
