just out of curiosity... i was wondering how far from the future when desktop computers have a minimum CPU of 5Ghz and more commmonly with quad cores oh and dont forget...cheapest video cards with 1GB 32 pipelines and 512 bit also desktops with DDR3 RAM of 2GB and above on a single stick! and my facorite when are we gonna see TB in our HDD instead of GB???????

i dont think there will be processors of 5Ghz.. it would produce too much heat.. they are staying close to the 3GHz reason for a reason,.. the processors will become more powerfull tough nevertheless ;)

yah ive had to agree with arcangel..it's true computers will stay around 3ghz for a long time.....all in the electronics....i head rumours about a type of memory that could hold an OS into it without actually installing on HD...is this true ?

Like a flash drive??? Shocking!

They have to get rid of the HD some how, and this seems like the only logical step. The HD is the piece which slows down the computer the most, the constantly moving part... It has got to go!

If you look at requirements now, it doesn't say that specifically what you need. Personally I dont think it will get that extreme anytime soon, and when it does, it will seem mainstream.

Also, I agree with angel that instead of raising the core speeds, there just going to keep adding more and more cores.

well... they want to make the driver's part more hardware based iirc (so its not controlled by the OS anymore). but i dont know about the OS itself tbh

I saw an article a while back that showed a PCI module some one created that held like 8 sticks of memory and used as a hard drive. It's extremely expensive.

I saw that as well, you can use either up to 8GB or 16GB of system RAM as a hard drive, I think it was around $300 for the device. But it used the SATA150 interface, so that severly bottlenecked it.

still ran like 4x faster then a raptor though, didnt it?

I dont remember, It loaded games and Windows pretty quickly. But again, it was severely bottlenecked by the SATA150 interface, which is why MaximumPC gave it like a 6 or 7.

Yes ram driver will be the next things. They are out already, so basically very fast access times. Less noise aswell, but obviosuly going to be quiete pricey.

i have read articals in pcworld about 16-32gb flash hard drives, and there are also hybrid drives which have like a 256mb catch

The IPOD nanos use a flash drive and they get up to 8GB in a tiny form factor. just think how many of those you could fit in 3.5" drive bay. Id guess it would take about 9 in the same space as a normal HDD

A thought.

There was an article on Tomshardware with a 32GB Flash drive which was used as a HD and had Windows XP on it. It was quite a bit faster than regular HD's. I also read the article about the PCI card with ram on it. If you do some research into Unix and IBM you will see they have been doing some pretty interesting things with processing for quite a while. It's due to the fact we operate with Windows we're about 10 yrs behind the development/power curve. But that's to be expected from using consumer software designed to be "idiot".. I mean general public proof. :P I have learned quite a bit from Unix users about computing in general and heard some interesting things. Just a thought!

TB harddrive is probably just around the corner, as i believe 750gigs is the biggest right now. Quad core is out already, and as for being the norm, give it a year or two. 512bit memory controller should be out with the R600, but i don't know how long it'll take for the cheapest cards to include it.

That and the fact theres no moving parts, so systems "should" last a hell of a lot longer.... it was always the HDD that dies first
