how much cooling is too much cooling?

i've installed 12 fans inside the case. knowing that the prescott still runs pretty darn hot 72c lol i'm still considering another HSF or water cooling.

12 fans isnt overkill unless you can take out like 3 of them and notive no difference in temps. i think you probably have a loud computer for no reason. its not really how many fans you have, but where they are positioned and how good your airflow is. 2 fans in the right place is better than 5 fans just slapped in there. a new HSF will give you the best results though. consider a nice big copper/aluminum (i thnk a mix of the 2 is best) HS and a higher RPM fan with a fan controller.

Argueable yes but if you have a brute force cooler than copper would be better :)

If you still have the stock setup case fans wont help much -- case fans are designed to get the heat out of the case .. the HSF is designed to get the heat out of the CPU and into the case ... unless the HSF is perfoming well the chassis fans will exhausting "cool" case air :p
