How to destroy a hard drive physically

Throw it in a fire, and then you can say whatever you want.

You could even say ollie ollie oxenfree if you wanted to. Nobody will judge you.

I tried the second option but it just laughed at me. i have a hard drive with information on it for banking and stuff, i ripped it apart down to the two silver disks in it and scratched both sides with a screw driver a bit, not all that much. think thats enough?

just take the platters out (those are the disks) and do w/e you want with them, scratch, melt, snap in half..anything

If someone gets any data off of them after that...they probably worked hard enough and deserve any info they get lol

The only way to destroy every bit of data is to break it down chemically... government and large corporations use acid baths, but taking a blow torch to both sides should do it.

Just go to the roof of a 15-20 floor building, make sure to bring a camera too. Then throw it from above and upload the video for us to see :P

Me and a friend did this to an Xbox hard drive last summer:

The lower left corner shows that it was shot.

If you want to make it unreadable to most people, all you'd have to do is hit it with a hammer a couple of times, make sure it's dented it. Maybe break the board on the backside too. But, like I said, the only way to destroy every little bit of data is to break it down chemically.

y dont u just like...erase all the data on it and use it in the future if all ur fraid of is data theives....i mean u can always reuse it lol??? but if ur just destroying for the fun of it...ya all these ideas are FUN! =P

P.S. dont like magnets like own all data?

Erasing it doesn't completely eliminate the chance of it being recovered. There are programs out there that can write the entire drive all 1s or 0s, which is the best method, but I've heard it has to be done a bunch of time to be 100% certain that all data is gone.

I have two ways:

1. Get a fireman on one of the steam trains to let me dump it in the box when the fire is roaring, it melts completely.

2. Get a drill, 3 holes on the platter, one through the motor, a hammer and then superglue to jam it all up.
