Hi,

I really need to upgrade my graphics card as I only have a nVidea Gforce 4 64 MB intergrated chip! This is actually ok as it can rin Call Of Duty 2 on High no problem...
However I bough F.E.A.R and will be buying the newer games that come out, and these will not work with my present chip!

I am looking into getting a card that isn't too expensice, I'm thinking of the Sapphire X1600 Pro 512MB DDR2 AVIVO TV/Out 8X AGP

Is this an Ok card, and will it run the newest games?

Thanks, Danny

Don't waste your money. The X1600 Pro will play current games just fine, but come this fall, you'll be finding yourself wanting to upgrade again. My suggestion: upgrade your system with a PCI-e board and get a 7600GT for around $230, or you could wait a little while for Vista to come out and get a DirectX 10 card. DX10 will be a huge improvement over 9, and it won't be backward compatible, so spending a ton of money on a new card now that won't run DX10 will just be a waste.

So are you saying DX10 wont work on DX9 games?

Or he could get a 7600GT for 150$ :P

I don't have a PCI slot, I only have an AGP...

When does DX10 come out?
So your saying that all the games from then on will be DX10 and I wont be able to play them?

Ok ok, if that is true, which from my knowledge i think it kinda is, then yes Microsoft along with game evelopers will no longer add support for anything under DX10 cards.... Of course this is only on newly released games after MS releases DX10.... So yes, if you can wait then do wait until DX10, but even then you might find it hard to afford a DX10 card, if they are really new.

Me, im still on DX8 on my crappy little FX5200. Does me well enough. But it all boils down to what you are planning to do, are you only buying FEAR and a few other recent games, or are you planning on becoming a gamer and buying every single new release for the next 15 years??? if the latter then i would wait (or buy a mid-range card to tide you over until DX10)

Thanks a lot for the help guys!
I think I'm going to buy the Sapphire X1600 Pro 512MB DDR2 AVIVO TV/Out 8X AGP becasue it's probably going to be a while before DX10 comes out, and its going to be really expensive to get a new DX10 card!

You gotta hate Microsoft sometimes though, huh?

Does it mean they'll no longer make games for non-DX10 card owners to play?

Everyone will have to buy a new card just to play the latest games!?

Thanks again, Danny!

Yeah... Vista is going to be a huge change for the gaming community. Developers are going to have to make the shift over to producing 64-bit games with DX10 support, while probably still having to make a secondary release for those running at 32-bit and DX9 or below. I'm guessing by winter 2007 that major releases will require Vista...

i wouldnt guess, guess for tomorrow, but not for next year, anything can happen in 2 years, i wouldnt guess for that far ahead

I got mine for $140 after rebates.

I read a bit about the step-up program before. what flaws? you can upgrade to newer versions/higher end models and only pay the difference, or shipping if it's the same price. they put the price you paid towards a new card.

I'll probably do it for a similar dx10 one when they come out.

wait, you can still play dx9 stuff with that, right? probably I dumb question, but I never really understood what it really even means.
