Just some standard laptop questions

Hey all

Just a regular normal college kid looking to get a laptop for college. Looking to just use it for regular uses: word processing, internet research, the likes. However, there are just two blips on what I want that deviates from the normal laptop.

1. I am looking to major in Computer Science. Now not (yet) being the computer guru, I have no idea if this would alter my laptop choice in any way, but I figure it's worth asking.

2. I am a casual gamer. I buy cheap 3 year old games for 5 bucks on steam because I was one of those deprived children that never got to play video games when they were younger. I figure that its better to play Just Cause 2 for 5 bucks than buy Rome total war for 50. Call me crazy, but that's just me.

So, what I guess I'm saying is that I play games with not too fancy graphics, but on my current crap computer from 2008 they don't run too well. Let's just put it that my computer has trouble running Star Wars Battlefront 2, and can't even run Windows Flight Simulator X. This is disappointing, and I figured if I'm getting a new computer anyways why not get one with better graphics.

Now, I don't want a gaming computer. Don't get me wrong. I don't want to spend more than 650 dollars on a computer. So I'm asking if there's any way that I can play games with decent graphics on a computer with not spending more than 650 dollars (while still being able to use it for regular college stuff), and if so, how would I obtain a computer like that?

Thanks to all of those who help.

EDIT: Oh and I don't want a mac obviously, and I would really like Windows 8. Don't judge, I like it.

after putting 4 kids thru college I will tell you to find out from the school what computer you need, some schools have preferences. And most if not all have deep discounts if you get them thru the school.. 2 of my kids went to UNC chapel hill, one to UF in Gainesville, FL, and one in the us navy academe, UNC prefers pc's and the tech dept recommended HP products because HP supports the school, UF included a MAC computer in the tuition. The navy didn't allow computers in the classroom.
