Laptop Performance

Hey!

Since i got my laptop, my performance has dropped drastically over the couple of years i've had it. I used to be able to run games like LoL and WoW on full settings smoothly and be happy as Larry. Lately, i find it hard to play LoL on it's lowest settings, i get FPS drops to under 5 sometimes.

I have a feeling it's because my laptop is full of cack that it doesn't need. Like a snotty nose.

If i wanted to restore it to as it was when i bought it, how would i go about doing it? Is there a way to restore it without the OS discs? If i could find those discs would it be best to completely restore it from scratch and start all over as if it was new?

I just need a bit of help before i even begin to think about it. If this isn't going to help my performance, i'll have to fork out for a new laptop completely.

Cheers!

Start by running CCleaner found here. http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner (link is on the right to download).

Run both the registry cleaner (MAKE A BACKUP), and run the regular cleaner on it.

Go in to add or remove programs (either thru CCleaner or the Control Panel) and remove everything that you don't use. If you don't recognize what something is, google it and see what it does before removing it.

Take some compressed air and blast out all the vents and remove as much dust as possible. On this note also download HWMonitor and see what your temps are when you're playing games. You might be overheating and causing it to slow down.

That's a start. Ideally you would just want to wipe it and reinstall Windows, because that's the cleanest and quickest way to get it back to "like new" performance. What I've listed above should help.

Also don't forget to run a thorough virus scan with MalwareBytes.

Personally I would just do a fresh install of Windows with cleaning out the fans. You will be amazed at how much faster it will be.

I say try to fix it manually first before you go and re-install the OS unless you really are just done with it and just want a clean slate ;P. I recently bought a 2010 laptop that was dirty inside from being a home used laptop, it was very fast when I picked it up w/ a clean install of w7, but I took it completely apart and cleaned everything anyways and it was even faster! I only recommend dismantling the laptop if you're certain in your skills, there's a few fragile pieces and on piece on mine didn't line up perfectly anymore, but it was unnoticeable if you weren't staring lol. That did a good bit for the laptop as well as upgrading to 8gb of ram! After CCleaner and malwarebytes, if it still isn't fast then you might want to consider a clean install of the OS :P. Make sure you aren't going to lose anything on the re-install then go for it man! Cleaning it up will help a lot though (defrag too)

I personally like to do a fresh reinstall every once in a while. I just did it recently again (although it was to fix a problem). Reinstalled all my games was a pain but it's worth it in the long run. If you can reinstall Windows easily enough, I'd advice doing that and cleaning out your PC. But if you can't for whatever reason, follow what I suggested earlier.

+1 :) Just a pain to move all the files while it's slow and then put them back on lol...I prefer keeping it all on an external along with a backup cuz it's less liekly that my external goes corrupt ;)
