anybody here use magic jack?
i'm thinking of getting rid of my land line and getting one of these.

it's hard to find good reviews with technical details.
i read that the software takes over your computer and you pretty much have to leave it on to make and receive calls.

is this still true?
i'm thinking i can either load it on my file server or build another one from old parts for this thing.

I've heard a lot of issues with magic jack, not sure if it depends on certain hardware or not. I have a client that has it and he said he had issues with it, can't remember exactly what though as this was over a year ago.

I have MagicJack and it works fine, no issues with it as long as you have a decent internet connection.

If you want to be able to receive incoming calls then, yes, you need to have it running all the time. If all you want to do is use it to make outgoing calls then I suppose you could fire it up just to make a call.

I have it load on my computer at startup and it runs all the time so I can make or receive phone calls at any time.

Magic Jack works but you have to have your computer and internet up to make and receive calls. I switched to Nettalk and I can turn my computer off or put it in sleep mode without loosing operation of the phone. Nettalk only requires DSL and a router.

I have Vonage, requires internet to work but you don't need a computer to be on. Never had any issues with it either.

Magic jack is life saver for me. I use it alot. I have few of them. as long as you have more than 2mb down and 512k up internet you are fine. if you have slow connections you try not to download any thing or stream any thing when you are on the phone.

It also can give you international calls at faction the phone company charge you.
Cheers.

One additional alternative is an OBi device from Obihai.

It is a stand-alone device like the ones from Nettalk and Vonage, but isn't locked to a specific service. :)

You can use it with Google Voice as well as a number of SIP services like:
- Broadvoice
- Callcentric
- Future Nine
- Sipgate
- Vitelity
- VoicePulse
- Voip.ms

I have it and think it works great. I've also used it to fax and although it's not officially supported, it worked fine, as well. If you have an older laptop, you could very easily hook it up to that and save a bit of power vs. leaving a PC running. For $40 up front and $20 a year, it'll be my dedicated land line for as long as the company exists.
