mixing RAM

RAM in old spare computer (Pentium II, 266MHz) is marked SDRAM. I have a strip of PC100 128 MB left over from an upgrade of another box. Can I put it in the empty slot on the old Pent II?

You should be able to; the general rule is "if it fits easily, than it should work". Worst case scenario, the RAM that's currently in the new machine is faster than PC100 then it will run at the slowest common RAM speed (i.e., you have a stick of PC66 and u put in a PC100 stick, they will both run at PC66)

Yes a lot of the older boards have a "slot" limitation meaning that if your mobo has a total limitation of 512MB and a slot limitation of 256MB ... you cant use a single 512MB stick of memory ... to get 512MB you need to use 2x256MB :)
