My First Overclock

Ok, this is my first attempt at overclocking...

I have an Athlon 64 3200+ at 2.0Ghz, and an ASUS A8N-E.

So far I'm up to 2.38Ghz with stock HSF and voltages.

Any suggestions and comments are welcome

Just keep an eye on the temps. If you havent adjusted the voltage yet then the temps shouldnt be much higher, but it's a good idea to watch them anyways.

And as you overclock higher, you should lower the HTT Link to 4x, to avoid the Hyper Transport being a bottleneck.
 
I'm at 2.41Ghz with CPU temps hovering around 30C idle.

I increased voltage from stock 1.47v to 1.55v, but 1.55v is the highest setting... shouldn't I be able to go up quite a bit more?

I can't even post at 2.45 with only 1.55v... what do I do now?

1.47 to 1.55 is a pretty significant jump, but usually they allow you to a bit higher. Probably because the motherboard you have isnt considered "high end", right?
 
350mhz pretty good i guess for a athlon, maybe you'll do better with a high end motherboard. i only got my athlon 400mhz over stock aswell before it was unstable and even votage upping oculdnt help
 
I would run a stress test to ensure stability. Either OCCT or Prime95.

If you want a really good idea of stability run both at the same time. It should max out your cpu usage and raise your temps as high as they can.

Edit: If you are brave and really want to make sure, run them for a few hours or over night.

Thanks, I'll download them, but I don't think I'd be comfortable running any stress tests overnight.

Been running it for a while... doesn't look like it's going to get over 40C.

Thats good, I don't know much about amd OCing but I know c2d's are not supposed to go above 60C so I suppose 40C is good for the AMD. Like stated above your limitations are probably because of your motherboard, but you never know, keep tweaking you may find the key to unlock it OC potential! :-P
 
Still running it... hovering from 38-40C, with just stock cooling.

I don't suppose that I''ll spend to much money to get it farther... I mean I could get a better mobo and a HSF, but I'm planning a C2D build, so I don't really see the use. Thanks for the help.

I just started OC'ing with my new build.
First I used the AI Overclock, but I want more than 10% :p lol.
So I got my 4600+ Up to 2.7Ghz now.
But I'm wonder about that previous post about the HT Spread Spectrum.

The only referance in my bios I see to HT, Is being able to set it to Disabled, Down, Center.
Currently it's at Down, and in Cpu-Z It shows my HT Link at 1125Mhz

Lowered the HTT to 4x... could someone explain to me why that helps?
Also knocked RAM from 266 to 200 and now I can hit 2.5Ghz, but it's hovering around 47C at full load.
 
Wow, I'm hitting 2.81Ghz now just fine... browsing, watching a movie, and running Prime95 at the same time, not a problem, at 49C.

Still would like to know about HTT and why knocking it down to 4x gives me some much more overclocking room.
 
HTT is the hypertransport bus for the AMD chip. Hypertransport is Amd's refined version of the FSB.. Basically it's a on-die (on chip) FSB, Though faster because it is connected directly to the CPU. But because it's connected to the CPU it's also tied to the Core clock speed of your cpu.. So when you raise the core clock, you raise the HTT. As your core clock gets higher it's necessary to lower the multiplier to make sure it doesnt rise too much past it's optimum, in your case 1000mhz. When its lower or higher than it's optimum, your system gets alittle unstable (alittle bit Up/down doesnt really matter). And obviously a stable system overclocks better. Does that make sense?

Ok, maybe someone can help me with this:

I was trying to push it a little further, and knocked the RAM back up to 233, which caused it to not even boot fully, so I cleared the CMOS. Now, even though I have the Vcore voltage set to 1.55v in the BIOS, PC Probe is displaying it as hovering around 1.45v
 
You should try a different sys info (Cpuz, sandra) to make sure it's not just pc probe. I know that some apps that are meant to gauge readings like that can be wrong.
 
It went back to where it should be, don't know what was going on... but I've noticed that it jumped from 1.57-1.58v to 1.60v a few times... anything to be worried about?
