Need help with building server.

I have never built a server before, and i'm not exactly sure of what I want to buy. This is for work, I'm not IT; But I think I can build the computer and then we have our contracted IT worker come in to do all of the work in connecting the workstations, setting network drives, etc.

Small description of company to help identify our needs. We are a manufacturing operation. We use 2 primary programs in our CSR department, Quickbooks manufacturing edition and an overlay program for inventory/barcode scanning. There are about 15 workstations. It is fairly hard drive extensive IMO, from searching through the customer database, inventory database, to different departments scanning our completed goods into the database as CSR is taking things out, etc. Currently we are running Win 2000 server

First, Which chipset do I want to use for this setup? I see a lot of server MBs with Intel 5000X and 5000P. Also I see E7520, NVIDIA nForce Professional 3600, 5000V, Nvidia nForce4, but not as common.

Then from there, which processor? I see many dual socket 771. Is this the most current? If I do go with the dual 771, how does that work? 1 active processor and 1 passive?

And for server video cards? Quadro4 series? What do you recommend here?

Hard drive - Currently running SCSI setup, and there is only 1 MB on newegg with onboard SCSI, so i'm willing to guess scsi isn't worth using even in server applications anymore. Correct me if i'm wrong please.

I have looked at a few things on Newegg, I don't know if i'm on the right track or not, so please feel free to push me in another direction.

Thanks so much!!

Im not really up with all the server hardware but your not running a data center. if all you have is 15 clients then its not going to make to much diffrence.

I am familiar with POS systems a bit, but not too extensively. I have worked with them briefly. Depending on the sales software you are using for your client workstations there are many solutions you can do. This overlay application that you are talking about, is it POS (as in point of sale for those who don't know)?

Also, not every client needs access to the quickbooks right?

Are you looking to centralize data? The server is for storage? I mean SMB connections in windows are limited to 15 maximum, so you would be forced to purchase like a small business server OS from MS, or go with a Unix/Linux OS which would be cheaper but would require that your IT guys know that platform.

I can maybe point you in the right direction, but I will need more info. Answer the questions I asked if you can and then I can get a better idea to help you.
