Network Privacy?

I have moved into a shared house recently, the other occupants have networked broadband and they will help me integrate my PC into the network soon.

I don't know anything about networks except that we can copy data from each others computer's.

However I do NOT wish to share all my files and I want to protect some of them, so how would I go about doing it. I expect that there are basic ways to ensure network privacy, but is this good enough?.....

because to be honest one of the guys is really good with computers and is EXTREMELY dodgy, I don't trust him. so I was wondering if there were any stronger ways to protect myself from the nosy get. :D
Seriously..

cheers,

1. Dont share net
2. A good firewall can tell you about every little connection to and from your comp
3. I think even the default windows settings should be decent
