New to RTS any suggestions??

Hi..

Well I've only played FPSes on my PC and I'm kind of bored of the popular ones right now. So I want to try RTS's but the only problem is the ones I've looked at seem REALLY hectic. C&C3, CoH, etc. I tried Civ4 and hated it, played Black and White 2 at my friends and it seemed alright, but I want a more modern combat sort of RTS that is more laid back then the ones I've seen. These guys have their mouse cursors in 3 different places at the same time..

Any suggestions?

Well, probably your problem is that you are probably watching people that have been playing RTS's for quite a few years and are used to doing that... However, to be fair Company of Heroes, even on easy can be rather difficult for someone that is new to RTS games, although I would definitely recommend playing that when you get a little more acclimated to the RTS genre, it's a ton of fun! :D ("Johnson, get your pants on, we're moving out...!")

Dawn of War (and the expansion) can be very fun at the easier difficulties for a newcomer, Rise of Nations is also very fun in similar situations (also has an expansion); both also have a "Gold Edition" which have the original and expansion pack included.

Battle for Middle Earth and Battle for Middle Earth 2 (expansion available for 2) are very fun, but are obviously set in the LOTR timeline. Age of Empires 3 is also quite fun and is very involving on many different levels. Starcraft is a classic that will ease you into the full expanse of the game (and you can pick up the original and expansion for $20! :)), although possibly not as extensive and overwhelming as some of the more recent releases...

In kind of a different genre of RTS, the Rollercoaster Tycoon series (1,2 and 3) is the best and the original Tycoon series that started all of the others (in my mind, at least... ;)). Otherwise, The Sims and The Sims 2 is also fun, but takes a certain taste. Oooh, and SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 are very fun and completely different types of games, and I would recommend both.

If you can find Startopia, it is one of the most unique and fun games I've ever owned... I've got others, but that should be enought to get you started... :)

just playing C&C3 at the moment. Im not normally an RTS fan but this has been pretty good so far, its failrly simplistic without being boring. Just the kind of pick up and play games i like :)

I like supreme commander, but i don't know if that would be considered and advanced RTS it's cool, that's all I know. Perhaps I'll have a computer that can actually run it correctly soon.

give a try to sc as well, it might be old but its the most balanced rts game out there consider it made 3 different race totally balance from unit counter to timing. just perfect rts game atm.

LOL thats the point :P Wouldnt be fun any other way

but i don't know if that would be considered and advanced RTS it's cool
If you're playing on a platform that can handle it, its friggen fantastic; theire more than enough micro/macro to suit damn near any player's taste

he meant StarCraft...
StarCraft was never a good game. It was just popular. Lack of physics, lack of modelling (although cheezy yet decent story), the game had one thing: HYPE. And before you rant about StarCraft being old and physics wasnt an issue -- look at Total Annihilation.

Speaking of which, SC could mean Supreme Commander.

Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, any C&C game, those are my faves. I have all C&C games, have TA, and had the beta of Supreme Commander. It was amazing.

and if u wanna kick it back a generation then go to age of empires...tho not the original...i would suggest age of empires II: the age of kings...that one rocks...also the tycoons, sims, simcity, and CivIII are my favorites...i love RTS they just rock!

if you really wanna kick it back a generation then go for Dune 2 Battle for Arrakis, worked lovely on my 80286 with no extra memory and is still one of my favourite games :D

Dawn of War dark crusade is my favorite rts of all time but im more into the evil type rts its a good rts thats fairly easy to play and can be almost impossible to beat on hard mode, battle for middle earth was pretty fun to but kinda short for me and had little difficalty in it unless you get the expansion pack witch king then it gets pretty hard those of some of the ones I like cheers

I looked at Supreme Commander and it seemed cool but, I am gonna stick with what I have.

BF2(not in genre) is just getting old with me, I do not like it anymore. There are so many lifeless 30yr olds on there and the age 10 brats. Ahhh, aggravating

Maybe try a change of pace? I was really frustrated with Karkand when I was new but as soon as I got in the gunners seat I was killing everyone. :D
