notebook playing up

Hi all, trying to fix a notebook for a friend, when I got it windows would not load at all and it would not boot from cd, after about 4 attempts of restoring it I am now finally at the stage where I am at the windows desktop, however, when I hover the cursor over the bar at the bottom or try to press anything I get the loading symbol and nothing else, even control alt and delete doesn't always work, and the task manager never works, anyone got any idea's other than it's knackered?

Just sort of done it, it did work in safe mode, found a page online that told me to disable all start up items, this worked, just need to find out which one it is now
