PC freezes every five minutes for a couple of seconds

After I installed McAfee virus scan and firewall my computer freezes for about 5 seconds every couple of minutes. I suspect some program is out out and looking for updates. I disabled automatic updates on the McAfee.

Is there some program that would display what program is hogging all my cpu time.

How can I turn off unwanted services that are running in the background.

Thx in advance for any help or experiences.

HP Pavilion PIII Windows 98 SE

to see what is using all of your system resources press ctrl+alt+delete and you should be able to find it from there, also not a big fan of 98 I have xp and 2000 on my machines, so you might want to look into updating your OS as long as you dont update to ME :p

Are you serious? I think 95 was one of the most unstable OSs to ever come out. Go with XP. I have it and my computer has not frozen once in a year.

Also, you might not have enough RAM to run complicated programs like McAfee.

Uh..... isnt that a bad thing?

WXP is quite easily argued to not be number one by a long shot. Both W2K and W2K3 are much more stable platforms.

You tried W2K3? :) You might like it!

W95A was pretty bad but W95B and W95C werent too bad at all. As for stuff that's worse? WindowsMe and WindowsCE are up there.
