PC game performance help

Whenever I try to play dead space my computer lags a lot. I use low settings and still in when it gets crowded in game the frame rate drops to crap.

Specs:
CPU : AMD64x2 4600+ (2.4ghz)
RAM: 3GB Corsair
GPU: nVidia 8600gt
HD: 160gb maxtor (80gb filled)

I've looked at game specs and such all over the place and it seems like I should be able to run this game just fine even on normal settings. I have downloaded the latest driver for my GPU, I made sure my HD wasn't completely filled. What else should I check?
 
Open up task manager when playing and open the performance tab. Play the game until you have lag, then alt + tab out and see if either memory or CPU are stuck at 100%. If they are, whichever it is is at fault. If neither are, your video card is holding you back.

You should be able to run it on medium-low settings, however what resolution are you trying to play at?
 
I just dropped the resolution from 1600x900 to 1440x800 or so and the game seems to to be running just fine. Sheesh cant believe I forgot to check that :o.
