hey guys im lookin to build a low budget pc, for using as a dedicated server, as u can tell i have a pentium d and i love it, but for this what would u suggest amd 64 is cheaper but pentium d being dual core and still not that expensive. could use some opinions,

When you press Crtl+Alt+Del and go to performance tab, does it show 2 graphs for CPU usage? If not, then you don't have a dual core.

I don't get what Hyper threading is. I have the same CPU on my other computer and its a D but its still single care. Some one has posted about how Dell lied saying their D was dual, only to find out that its not.

Only the Pentium 4's have hyper threading (and the extremes), the Pentium D's and A64's dont.

He said that he knows he has a Pentium D, so I dont know what your trying to ask ADE.

To answer your question, i'd say that the Pentium D (except the 805) would be the best choice for general use, but if you game, the A64 would be the best choice.

hyperthreading just means the processor has onboard multitasking processing (it can decide for itself how to divide up multitasking jobs) so the o/s doesn't have to figure out how to divide up resources, and set priorities............

It really doesn't make that much of a difference.. Some programs run faster with it off.

I'm saying that he thinks his D is dual core. It isn't. At least from my experience. Just letting him make sure.

Just to make it a little clearer, hyper threading is a "logical core" on the newer P4 models. It uses unused clock cycles to produce a logical 2nd core, so it acts as a dual core. However it doesnt perform as well as a dual-core CPU.

He said he has a Pentium D, which is a dual core.

Hmm... maybe I have a Celeron D...but I swear there was a post that said their Pentium D was single core...

Nope.

Celeron / Celeron D / Celeron M = Single Core

Pentium 1-4 / Pentium M /Athlon 64 = Single Core

Pentium D / Core 2 Duo / Athlon 64 X2 = Dual Core

Yes, its a dual-core.

And I see you have the 805, which is the cheapest dual-core you can get, and overall is a pretty poor performing card. It's basically just a P4 2.66 to most games and apps since most are only single threaded.

I would go with an A64 if you were deciding between an 805 and A64.

actually performs well stock, and great at oced to 3.6 ghz i knwo about comps, it may be cheap but its good for overclocking, and i read a few articles before buyin and it will oc to 4.0 ghzz and be stable so its not a poor performing cpu, but this wasnt a debate about that i was needing opinions

Pentium D series is the first Dual core CPU for Intel. Why would anyone consider Celeron? For just abit more expensive you get a much better processor.

One of my comps is a Intel Celeron D 331 (The cheapest one you can get i think) I bought it for a cheap build that would keep others from usin my main.

Anyway, on topic, IMO I would go for the Pentium D, any of them.

If you can afford it, you should go for the Core 2 Duo, if not opt for the Pentium D series. I tend to stay away from AMD at the moment, because their CPUs, although are marginally cheaper than Intels, they use more power and lack the performance of their Intel counterparts.

If your keeping it at stock however, the Pentium D 805 is a pretty horrible card. Again, in most apps, especially in games, it performs just like a P4 2.66Ghz with only a 533Mhz FSB.

He wasnt talking about a Celeron, Ade just mentioned it in one of his posts.

acually AMD has a huge performance gap between intel right now but their 65nm processors use the least power.
