Please help me with VIM (VI Improved)!

How do I insert the ANSI (escape) character in VI or VIM? I know you can do it in ED, and there is an ED input mode, but if I try to type it, it justs exits that mode!

Bumping the thread because I found the solution...several years later.
Just hit Ctrl+V then Escape.
