Power Supply Questions

I have a couple questions about my power supply. One is if I'll need to get a new AC Cable to support my power supply. I currently have a 430w LEC LPJ223 ATX Power Supply and on the back casing, it has a switch for 115v and 230v. Being American, I would suppose that I would need to have the switch on 115v, which it is, but all my AC Cables are 125v. When I put the power supply into my computer, it ran fine for a while, then my computer would shutdown, but the power button on the front would remain lit, causing me to first unplug my computer from the surge protector. Waiting for the light to go out, then plugging it back in. Would this be caused by my AC Cable being too high of voltage? Also, I am looking into buying a nVidia 9600GSO GPX card and one of the requirements is a 6-pin connector. When I looked at the plugs, I only have 4-pin connectors. Can I still support the card with the 4-pins, or will I have to buy another graphics card?

Thanks for all your help,

First off your mains cable is OK, the cable itself is rated up to 125 volts so running on 115 volts is fine. The voltage rating is there purely to tell you the maximum voltage to use it on.

As for the graphics card, you can get a 4 pin to 6 pin adaptor that will do the job with your new card.

Okay, but when I put the new power supply in, my computer stayed on for a while, but it shut off, but the power light on my computer remained on, causing my to physically unplug my computer from the power supply. Wait till the light turned off, and then turn it back on to get it to turn back on..

Sounds like a PSU or motherboard failure. What PSU is that? Does anything else in the computer power on?

Unplug the computer from the wall. Hold down the power on button on the front of your computer for 10 seconds to discharge the motherboard.

Plug the computer back in and try again.

When I put it back into my computer, it smelled like, what my mother explained to be as 'an electrical fire' I doubt this would be safe.

dont put it in the computer.

It could be a faulty PSU. And you caould be drawing too much for your com to handle (I know its a long shot, but your PSU is an El-Cheapo make, and they usually dont last long, and usually dont supply the advertised amount.

Its a complete piece of crap. You require a PSU with a minimum of 26A on the 12V rail. You should also look at having:

Active PFC
80+ efficiency
MTFB at 50oC (not 25oC)
5 year warranty.

Forget wattage, its about quality of 12V rail amperage. Look at the 520W corsair unit.
