Programs Lagging

Hi guys. Got a question that has been bugging me for weeks now. First off with my computer specs

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Gigabyte P35-DQ6 Motherboard
2 Gigs DDR2 RAM 5-5-5-18
7900GTX Video card
Windows Vista 32bit

I have been having problems lately playing games, or some other minor programs. I can best describe it by saying, when the game ramps up in intensity (jumping into a fight, etc), it sometimes, and I haven't been able to make it happen on demand at all, freezes the program (not the whole computer, just the program that jumped up in intensity), for about 4 seconds or so, then catches back up?

Any ideas??? If you need any more info, just msg me.

Are they games and software that worked perfect before ? They could just need patching some online games like team Fortress 2 and Company Of heros will lock up for a few seconds due to the game needing patching or the server is messing up due to overload. Company of heros will lock up pernantly due to the bugs in online play. it's best you list all the software thats having problems it could just be a messed up windows install, Vista isn't fully supported by all games and software yet.

Are all your drivers uptodate?
have you scaned for viruses ?
Have you checked your hardware in control panel , devices are working fine?
