PS3 question.

is it against PS3 rulz/copyrights to upgrade the HDD in my PS3?or for that matter is it ok to discuss this @ this forum? if everything is good to go than i would like to get a little help on upgrading my HDD in my PS3 to 1TB,thanks.if everything i just said is against PS3/Computerforum rulz than plz delete this post.
 
I dont think it is against the rules.

If you upgrade the hard drive you void the warranty on the ps3.

I hear it is pretty easy just be sure all parts are compatible and all data is backed up/copied.
 
I don't think it voids the warranty. Its made to be easily accessible. There is no sticker over it or anything for them to know you've ever changed it. And you can use any laptop hard drive.
 
Yes it is legal, any hardware mods are 100% legal, once you bought it, it is yours to do with as you will. I don't think your warranty is voided, and as Troncoso says, any 2.5" SATA drive will work

So far as I know, it is as simple as unscrewing and sliding out the old one and putting in a new one, then you can install the PS3 software onto it, or other OS software, like Ubuntu

Actually, they removed that feature since someone was able to hack a ps3 by using the other OS option.
 
I was looking into doing this with mine before it got stolen.

It is very simple. Like everyone else said, it's just like changing out the HDD in your tower. Just make sure you have everything you need in order to get the PS3 running again afterward.

There are actually many in depth sites that detail just how to do this, though I don't remember any of them off the top of my head.

In regards to Troncoso's last post...

They should give that guy an award, because it's extremely hard to 'hack' a PS3.

But installing another OS onto the system isn't really hacking. More like modding.

The PS3 in itself is just a computer with a dedicated OS. Installing another one like Linux just changes the platform a bit and allows you to do more. You are, in a sense, not using the Playstation OS anymore when you do this.

Now, of course, it allows you to do several illegal things like burn ISO's of your games to your harddrive, but still...

I thought it voided the warranty but maybe that was just here say when the idea first came about beacuse all the info i read now says otherwise.

He used the other OS feature to hack the ps3. And yeah, what people fail to notice in these situations is that brilliant people are the ones accomplishing them. But, it's like awarding someone for killing the president, very hard to do, but that doesn't mean anyone wanted it to happen.

Okay to discuss. I did it myself with the help from Zatharus in this post. A few pics I took here.

I don't see why you couldn't use a SSD, but you may want to google that and research further. The form factor would work. You would want to backup everything imo, the link above describes how you do that step by step.

The backup feature is easy. Just use it to back up your system to an external drive, pop the new drive in then use the restore feature. Sony makes like easy
