Hello all,

I've decided that I need to get myself a laptop. I'm not in too big of a hurry but I will need it before summer. I'll be applying to college next year and would like someplace to keep all my stuff organized and keep with me through all of college.

Right now I use my Desktop computer at home to do my school work, watch videos on youtube, surf the web, edit videos using Sony Vegas, and listen to music (not necessarily in that order :D ). I don't tend to do much gaming at all. I plan to major as an engineering major in college also.

What I need the laptop to do in order of importance:
1. be relatively small and light. I'm thinking sub 4.5 pounds and either a 13.3 or 14 screen
2. have at least 256 GB of hard drive space, 500 is better and 750 is much better (for videos)
3. Have at least 4 GB of RAM. 6 would be better and 8 I think might be overkill but it wouldn't hurt.
4. i5 or i7 processor.
5. Long battery life 5+ hours
6. Have a disc drive. if it doesn't I could buy an external one.
7. Have a visible screen outside.

I haven't decided on either windows 7 or 8 yet. I've had much more experience with 7 and I hear 8 is either terrible or fantastic. Also touchscreen is of no importance to me.

I've done some searching myself and found some that have caught my eye.
An Asus: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...lack/6775213.p?id=1218806578593&skuId=6775213
And an Acer: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+...084844&skuId=7648077&st=acer aspire&cp=1&lp=4

Oh and I need it to be under 700 but that can change a little bit. :)

Thank you for your help! :good:

Go Asus since they are a far better brand then Acer especially if you want that computer to last.

As for Windows 7 or 8 I would go Windows 8. Much faster and more responsive with better built in security features. If you don't like Metro just download and install classic shell which gives you the start menu button back and will boot your computer into traditional desktop every time, I haven't been in metro in forever now which is fine by me since my Vaio is not touch screen.

Toshiba Satellite: http://www.staples.com/Toshiba-Satellite-U945-S4140-14-inch-Laptop/product_162708
Lenovo Ideapad: http://www.staples.com/Lenovo-IdeaPad-U310-133-Touch-Screen-Ultrabook/product_141488
and Asus Vivobook s400: http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-S400CA-DH51T-14-Inch-Touch-Ultrabook/dp/B009F1JL5A

I've pretty much eliminated my desire for a disc drive and will look into external ones. The appeal of a smaller laptop is too great. Now I'm more interested in processing power, RAM, hard drive space, Battery Life, and visibility.
