i'll tell you right now.. stay the HELL away from the call of duty series.

I have to agree....I been playing COD4 and while its fun it really is mindless and lacks any real skill. I wish COD4 had some long distance type maps to prevent the never ending chaos of nade spam , machine gun wall spam and lack of team work ruin it for me.
CoD4. Going against what was said, get in a clan and get some scrims going, it is one of the funnest things you can do. There are 2 communities, 1 which isn't, and 1 which is. The one which isn't is public, the ones that come in moaning and bitching all the time that get swiftly kicked from any decent, watched server, so congregate in the ones which aren't covered and are generally empty apart from them.
The other community is clans. You get contacts very quickly, and you will find members go into each others servers and because everyone knows everyone nobody messes about and they all help each other. If public comes into the server and starts messing about, they go out, but you tend to get other clan members or regulars. Regulars stay and are allowed to stay because the server is good, so they want to stay, and are allowed to stay because they aren't idiots. The other clan members that come in behave accordingly because they have a reputation to uphold for themselves and for their clan, and there would be consequences (ie, privilages removed/exclusion from their clan) should they start anything in another clan server.
There are a hell of alot of custom maps so you can get the longer maps. Twist, don't know if you have played mogadishu, but try to take a look at it, it is a huuuuuuuge map, impossible to nade spam at the start.
Along with the maps is the gametypes so there are different weapons, different objectives, different skins/themes, certain things disabled, certain things changed which deals with all of the stuff that you mentioned you hate.
You can't get into many public servers with them, but near no clans play matches in non-modded servers. We use Pam4 on ours as it is what CoDleague use.
Once you get into it with a good group of people, it is the game it is meant to b, not a console port, and most of the crying people have gone off to MW2.
you could try BF2, BC2, CoH (hell of a good game), Red Orchestra, UT, HL: DM. I would still say CoD4 is the best though, 770 hours play time and still loving it
But i havent played it for 2 years i think.
