socket doesn't see nic card

I have a Toshiba SatelitePro 430cdt lap top. 1995 vintage I guess. My old 3com modem works fine. I can't get any CardBus32 network cards to even get acknowledged by the PCIMIA socket. Do I have to use an older 16bit NIC card? Or is the socket broken even though the modem card works?

Toshiba tech support just confirmed that I need a 16bit PCIMIA NIC card (PC Card) a CardBus32 which is 32 bit will not work. Any PC Card NIC card prior to 1998 will work. Anybody have one?
