Hi

I had the unfortunate accident of spiling a small ammount of soft drink on the lap top while it was on.

The drink spilt around the function keys. I immediately turned off the lap top and turned it upside down hoping that this would stop the liquid from spreading through the computer.

After leaving overnight it wont turn on. Battery and power ligh are on but nothing else.

any help would be appreciated.

When that fingernail polish remover was spilled in my wifes computer it took it about 4 days before it started working right again. You probably still have some moisture inside the laptop.

if u know how remove the keys that u spilt it on and leave it out or even near a fan but just let it dry. or u can go in and pat it down with a towel or something of that sort.

One option (after you have left it for a few days and then tried again) is to strip the laptop down, get access to the motherboard etc, and wash the board in distilled water, then leave it to dry for a few days before connecting it all back together. The problem is that you laptop was on at the time of the spill, so damage may have occured.

hi

thanks for the advice. i have called the local techie and he cant get to it for a least a week.

Is there anyway of reading the hard drive on another computer in the meantime. There are some files that i need to access for work in a hurry.

I have access to another laptop. is it possible just to switch hard drives without installing software etc.

The damaged laptop is a dell inspiron 8600. the other one is a hp.

thanks again.

Not really, it is physically possible, but doubtful that it would boot. May be worth a try if its urgent. It wont damage anything, provided you can open the laptop up (trickey sometimes)

dp you have a desktop? The HD on this model is easy to remove. Check Dell's tech support site for instructions. You pull a few screws and it slides out. Once it's out, you can get an adaptor to convert the IDE and power slots from slim format to standard, so you can plug it into a desktop computer as a slave drive. Not hard to do at all. You could probably also just plug it into another laptop and have it boot...I've done this with standard drives on a desktop. Windows xp will hate it tho as you "changed" the hardware configuration and it will likley make you try and reactivate windows.
