Hello people

I am about to get an Asus G74sx and having the computer knowledge of a grape I need your help. As I said I'm getting the G74sx but I would also like to instal a Samsung 120GB 840 SSD. Would I be able to keep the current 500GB harddrive on the laptop without removing it when installing the SSD? Or will I have to remove the HDD if I want to instal the SSD?

regards :)

The specifications state that your laptop has the ability to have two hard drives, so you could have the 500GB and the SSD. While looking at the specs though, it states it comes with a 160GB SSD, are you sure you only have the one 500GB drive?

Yeh it has everything bluray player, 17 inch screen..except an SSD. I thought it had a second hard drive but wasn't sure.
Could installing that type of SSD into my G74 be done by me or should I get it done professionally?

It should be pretty easy, Asus is usually pretty good about making their components user replaceable. If you google your model, you can find the manual.

A family member of mine has the G74.. They came in several configurations, but all have the 2 hdd slots.

You can use any combination of drives..

-Single HDD
-Single SSD
-HDD +HDD
-HDD + SSD
-SSD + SSD

My family member uses one SSD for his OS and programs, and then a HDD for his games, music, pics...etc

Super easy to do.. open panel on back, put the SSD you want into the caddy that comes with machine--screw in..plug into the sata connector..

You may want to format the other drive after backing up if your gonna use the Samsung SSD for Windows..

This may help.. its for the G74SX-A1.. but they are all the same. http://rog.asus.com/24752011/labels/rog-exclusive/how-to-upgrade-the-g74sx-a1-gaming-laptop/

The one drive has the ribbon cable.. so after you plug into the drive..make sure you plug the ribbon into the board.. you can totally do it yourself..

yes i think there is a program to do it but usally it leaves errors in the OS registry. so maybe the best idea is to just format the HDD and instal the OS on the SSD
