STarcraft 2 any good?

Hey all, for some reason i have a massive craving for some serious hardcore RTS games.

Iv read umpteen times that SC2 is the go to game for frustration, hardship but ultimately rewarding game time.

What makes it soo good. I missed the first one but have been a long time fan of RTS's. (Although as of late iv not played many)

So whats everyone thoughts on the game.

(Any help is great as i really dont want to buy it for £30 and not like it. I cant believe after how long it has been released its still that price.)

to be honest, if you are a fan of RTS's you won't like starcraft, its not really an rts its in its own genre i guess. The game revolves around the order in which you do things, sending out units etc if you like things like C&C,supreme commander etc then you probably wont like it.
Then again thats just my opinion, i regret spending 30 quid on it though, not even worth a tenner :p

I strongly recommend giving Supreme Commander forged alliance a go, or supreme commander 2. They have everything you could ever want from an rts and they should be pretty cheap now

The thing thats drawn me to sc2 is the resource management and micromanagement of units. Its very old school which i gotta say is appealing to me :P

Awesome, thanks Nevakonaza

EDIT: @ramodkk i played that game to death back in the day :P I think i may have to buy it again, i havent played it for some years now :P

I enjoy the game. the problems that I do have with it seem to be in multiplayer. I am only in silver league and 1v1 is fine ususally but once I get to 2v2 and up it just seems to be people trolling the ladder :/ I still think it is a good game to get. I still ladder regular but it seems like you need to get to the higher leagues to actually get some gaming in.

How is the multi on it? I want a challenge but constant rape will annoy me within a few games. Are you matched evenly generally?

It is really competitive and you do get a lot of good matches in. I have been in plenty of 30+ in matches that go back and forth. The matchmaking system that they have is really good. I am just in the lower leagues so it can get annoying when you get cheesed by people who are trying to cheat themselves into a better league. It is not super common in 1v1 but 2v2 it happens all the time for me. By the way I am in silver league to give you some reference.

Ahh ok, so how does the ladder system work? Is there a ranking system with levels, or a ranking system like the old GoW games where its based on win/losses. Or is there more to it than that like individual stats ranking.

Awesome, i am really thinking about taking the plunge and buying this. It just seems awesome.

Just need to a find a willing buddy with more downloads than me to download the trial thing :P

Hey,
I'm pretty big SC2 fan. I play a lot but I'm only in platinum league. The game is really good and incredibly balanced (despite what some may have you believe. Terran seems to have an edge in the pro scene. If your not willing to invest a lot of time into it then I'm not sure I would bother as the learning curve is really steep and just clawing your way into gold league is a daunting task for some.

The match making system does a really good job of matching you with opponents of your skill level. Salvage mentioned that he is in silver league where he sees a lot of cheesie tactics. These tend to get less common as you get higher up. I've had many 30 - 90 minute games that go back and forth until nearly all resources on the map are mined out. Just barely inching out a victory in a 30 minute match is really satisfying.

The game revolves around economy management. In an ideal game all of your production building should be constantly producing units without queing up any units which needs to be done while your scouting, building, attacking, defending.

I'd be more than happy to help you out if you've picked up a copy and need someone to practice with to get the hang of things.

Damn this sounds like my sort of game. I presume the community will be around for a while to come yet then? I love DoW2 but that community is all but extinct.

Soon as i have the money i think this is my next buy :P

Yea the hardcore community is pretty big, but it seems as though less and less casuals are playing the game. Just check out the team liquid website or forums. They're pretty booming. At any given time there is 10-80k people watching the live streams. With big tournaments going on every week.

The biggest tournaments have $20,000++ 1st place prizes which are done almost every month such as IPL, NASL, MLG and GSL which is the cream of the crop.

If your not sure if you want to pick up the game. I would go to either HD Starcraft, or Husky Starcraft youtube channel and watch a few of their casts to see if it looks like the type of game you'd be willing to learn. At the lower levels of play if you can just learn to build out of all your production buildings constantly, while not getting food capped, that alone will get you to gold. It's much easier said than done though.

Check out one of those channels and watch a few games. I'll post a few good ones for you to check out when I get home from work. Long game doesn't always mean good, so don't just go for the longest one you can find :p.

Awesome, thanks mate. I have watched one match and it looked amazing. Think it was between a couple of guys called Husk and Mana. Looked like an amazing match.

Iv just downloaded the demo (the old demo they had before the started edition they now have) Im hoping it wills till work as its still up on fileplanet.

Well if you can just get your hands on a copy of the game to install. My disc came with 2 extra cd keys that are good for 7 hours of multiplayer each. If I can dig those up, I don't mind letting you use them as I've had the game for over a year and havent made use of them yet.

I just built my new rig this morning and I'm pretty excited to get online and play some games. Gonna pick up BF3 tonight, and COD MW3. I was previously using a comp that had trouble playing SC2 on the lowest settings. I logged on this morning and played my first 4v4 (which was impossible on my old comp cuz of lags) and cranked everything up to ultra with barely a hiccup in a huge battle. This game is typically CPU bottlenecked rather than GPU especially in 3v3 and 4v4 games.

You'll be able to play with everything maxed regardless.

The game is awesome, exactly what i was looking for in terms of Single player. Thanks you for your offer of the cd keys but i think this game is a definite buy for me and if i only have 7 hours and then cant buy the game for a few weeks ill be quite upset haha. So i am going to save myself for it :P.

If you want add me on steam and origin, mikeb2817 for both. And thanks for your help :P Again this game is too cool haha.

Something to keep in mind if your playing single player is that I believe it sets the default game speed to normal instead of fastest, which is the speed that multiplayer is played at. Its good for getting familiar with the game but if you want to delve into multiplayer, then you should def play a few games on fastest before you get online.

Your also likely to get spanked your first ten or so ladder matches until it figures out your skill level.

I'll add you when I get online tonight.

Ok cool, and iv finished the 3 campaign missions and iv just started having a go of skirmish, i did set it to fastest, so i think ill try and learn the ins and outs now until i get the game :P.

Unfortunately i dont have a decent internet provider so i cant get the 7gb starter edition of sc2 ( i think thats what they replaces the demo i have with). So i gues ill have to wait to try the other races.
