Steam Help

I had a steam account years ago with counter strike and half life 2.

I recently re-downloaded steam and half life 2 to see if I could get into it as I have never played it all the way through.

I go to play half life 2 and i is choppy as hell. So I go wtf.
I then go and open up Doom 3. Runs fine. wtf.

So my question is, does play a game on steam require a stable internet connection no matter what type of game it is? Because it seems to me that if I can run doom 3 which is not through steam just fine, I should be able to run half life 2 just fine.

Try going to library-half life2-right click and properties-local files-verify integrity of game cache that normally solves problems with steam games

But no the internet connection shouldn't have any effect on the game itself but steam does require an internet connection to start

So i tried validating the local file and still have the same problem. However, this time when I loaded steam, it told me I needed to install something to get it to run correctly on my version of windows (7) and when I went to install it, it failed.

how odd, unfortunately i don't have windows 7 so can't really help but it might be worth dropping steam an email or going on their forum
