This really isn't what i needed....

Hey all...

I was just about to go to bed (it's 3:30 am now and I need to be up for school at about 6:30am) and i pull my ipod out of its case to plug it in so it can charge, and i get a shock...the screen has been broken. as you can imagine, i'm incredibly tired and incredibly pissed. is there anything i can do about it? it's still under warranty (i just checked), will apple fix it for free? is there anywhere I can send it to have a new screen put in, or possible do it myself? is it even worth it to fix it? the outer screen part (the hard plastic) isn't broken, but the actual lcd has a crack in it.

thx alot for your help guys.

You could send it in to Apple for a replacement screen. Or they could send one out to you for the price of the part and S+H if the store/vendor won't accept the return. Someone could assume it was damaged by abuse. That's where you may get a hassle. It sounds like a cap shorted and discharged giving you a good one there! I would first complain to the place you bought it from about the defect there! Go for it! :D

I think you misunderstood the 'I get a shock.' Well, either that or I did :P

He was shocked to find that the screen was broken. :)

Well, sort of. Friday, when I came home from school, my iPod was still in my pocket, and I was rubbing my cat on the floor. I hadn't had a need for it all weekend, and just as I was about to go to bed, I remembered that it was running low on bat, so i took it out of the case thingy that it comes with, and found a black spot, about 1 square cm, in the middle of the screen. when i saw this, my jaw dropped, and i put my head on my desk and said...well, something that shouldn't be said here. when i turn it on, the screen is indeed messed up, not just in the spot where the lcd cracked, where the earbud must've put too much pressure on the screen.

Thanks for your replies...i was just about to phone apple support. :)

not sure how much sleep i'll be getting tonight....

EDIT: BTW, i bought it on ebay, so returning it isn't exactly an option. but i checked, and it is still in warranty.

second EDIT: Also, the ipod could use a new battery. "could use" meaning if I didn't need to send it in for repair (at ipod mods, etc) i wouldn't get a battery, but if i'm shelling out $100 for a new screen, and it could use a new battery....i dont even think its worth it to get it fixed.....

Either way you look at it.. it was possitively "Shocking"! My Ipod! Just hope it will be fixed under warranty. Otherwise the price of everything will be another....   whatever? :(

ipod repaired service is amazing, you request a repair, they dhl you a package contains a special box and a return package. You put the ipod in an then dhl pick it up and send it to apple, who return a new/fixed ipod in a few days. From logging my call to receiving my new ipod was < 1week

yup... the battery of my mothers Ipod died because it wasnt used for quite some time (over 2 months...yea,.. and im sitting here with my 256Mb mp3 player.. ),.. we got a package delivered at home, sent the ipod in the package to the adress imprinted on it, and 6 day's later the ipod was back, (weither a new battery, or a new ipod, i dont know that, since the broken one looked brand new still too)

Just spoke to Apple...they won't cover my lcd cracking under warranty because "it wasn't a manufacturing defect".

sigh....
You should have said to them that they're right it's not a manufacturing defect, it's a design flaw, and thus "defective at the time of sale", which constitutes Breach of Warranty.

I quote you from Wikipedia:

if the product fails prematurely, it may have been defective when it was sold and could then be returned for a refund or replacement. If the seller dishonors the warranty, then a contract claim can be started in court.

It would be far cheaper to buy a new one then trying to take Apple to court there! :P unless your attorney is already working on a class action suit. Apple execs would be going...

a cheaper option would be, bear with me on this one

Go to ebay, and buy a broken Ipod. There are loads for sales that have broken lcd displays. for well cheap
replace your cracked screen with the broken one
then send it to apple saying that the screen just broke one day
;)
btw they are easy to open and replace you just need a VERY thin knife

That is so counter intuitive. Kind of funny though :)

I know a guy who did something similar with headphones. He bought a new set and returned the broken ones.

That would probably go over like a lead balloon trying to pass that one off! :P Gee if they bought that do you think they would buy some properites I could sell them in Antartica? bbrrrrr... it's colddddd hhhhere! :P

I was just looking on ebay (for a new ipod, actually) when I came accross this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-iPOD-VIDEO-...7QQihZ011QQcategoryZ48680QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

A new screen for the 5G ipod, for only about $30. It seems too good to be true, yet they seller as 99% positive feedback, and there are no bad reviews on the screens. Should I do it?

Also, if the screen is cracked on my old one, once I open it up, couldn't I get like, liquid crystals everywhere? I don't know much about LCD screens....but if I press down on the bezel of the ipod, I can actually feel the glass of the lcd screen cracking and what not. Below is a pic of the ipod...

Did you stand on that? :P Looks like your playing some Chilli Peppers...

It does seem to good to be true but with that much positive feedback I'm thinking it's real. At least worst come to worst you'd only be out $26 + shipping and have the chance to save quite a bit I think it's worth trying.

Something pressed into that good by the looks of the damage there. Drop a hard cover book on it or something? If the EBay deal works out you still will have to be very careful when replacing the bbbrrrr bbrrroooo brrook kenn one there. Any soldering would have to be done with looooooowww heat or ? It's cooked fast!
