Totally LOST here! Laptop keeps dropping signal.

New HP 2000 Notebook-Windows 8

Router-Netgear N300-WNR2000

Have tried everything and the new laptop keeps dropping the internet connection. Updated the driver on the laptop and it told me I already have the most up to date driver. It's a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter.

Have also did the samething to my Netgear router and also told it's up to date.

The only thing left is i'm thinking the Netgear N300 router does not work very well with the laptops Windows 8. Am i'm on to something here? If you think it is the router what router out there does work with Windows 8 or do you think there is more I could do to the Netgear router to make it work? Thanks!

You do have a cheap N router there. I would recommend trying a different router. Have you tried taking the laptop to a different place that has wifi and see how it reacts?

Should have kept this in the same thread as the last one.

My screw up. Should have kept it in the original one. I think the problem might be my router does not work well with Windows 8. Do you think that's a possibility?

My wife had her Aspire One(Windows 7) for 2.5 years and not one problem with it losing it's internet connection. Replaced it Saturday and now the new laptop is having this problem.

My Wii/Netflix works perfectly. I was thinking of buying a new router and trying that. What router would you get that you know would work with Windows 8? Keep in mind that i'm just using the wireless router to stream Netflix and for my wife's laptop. Many thanks!

Yes I read also it supports Windows 8. This is what pi#### me off about computers. Now i'm thinking maybe it could be the computer itself. At this point I don't know what to do. I really don't. I'm thinking of just boxing up the computer and returning it. Thanks.

That's why you need to go to another place that has WiFi to test. It may very well be the windows 8 driver.

john35, Never dropped the signal yesterday so I thought I was in the clear. Just now it dropped the signal. Now I checked and the router is working but for some reason the laptop dropped the signal.

Everytime it drops the signal my Netgear does not even show up as a connection on the laptop but the neighbors always does. And I did connect to hers to see if it would connect and it did. Isn't this 100% proof the problem is with my router? Also I'm going to hardwire the laptop downstairs to see what the laptop will do.

It is possible to plug the laptop directly into the router? The more I think about it this won't solve my wireless problem. Why would it connect so easily to the neighbors(weaker)signal? Does this not prove the problem is with my router? Thanks!

It would be my guess that is your router. Trying a different router would be my first course of action.

I just now brought the laptop downstairs and it's 3ft from the router and all strength bars are lit. When I take it upstairs it loses 2 bars. Will see if it loses the connection downstairs. The old Aspire One always had a full signal upstairs. From what I have seen of Windows 8 I could easily get by with Windows 7. Progress?!! Morris,Illinois? I'm here in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Fairly short drive.

Actually some of my relatives are near Cedar Rapids, over 90 percent of my relatives live in Iowa. I have friends in Des Moines, been a few years since I've seen them though.

Now since I brought the laptop downstairs and I get a full signal,if the internet connection fails wouldn't the problem be with the computer?

Lived in Riverside Iowa(15 miles south of Iowa City)until graduated,Air Force 4 years then back to Riverside. Moved to Washington Iowa then moved here to Cedar Rapids 7 years ago. You could say i'm from Eastern Iowa!

Thats why I'm saying take it to a library or someplace that has wifi to see how it reacts. If it doesn't lose connection then you can assume its the router.

Will do. Thanks. Update: Got money back from my router since I only have had it for a short time. Bought the Netgear 600 and it has not dropped the signal since installed yesterday. So that tells me it was the router. Fingers crossed!!
