Troubleshooting Home Network Issues

I am always having problems with my home network. Is there a standard way to troubleshoot the problems? Like a list of what to check?

The main problem is my second desktop computer. This is the family workstation and connection is spotty at best. Currently on ipconfig /all it lists the correct static IP, however it cannot connect to the internet.

My hardware:

Scientific-Atlanta WebSTAR
cable modem
Linksys WRTP54G 802.11g router for Vonage

Main desktop [Gateway]: Wired, connected directly to router
Other desktop [HP]: Linksys PCI adapter, single moveable antenna
IBM Laptop: Linksys notebook adapter
Dell Laptop: Included internal card

Your sig. is, quite, amusing...

As for the problem, which one is the desktop you are referring to? Is it the one you labeled "Other Desktop?"

Also, have you checked to make sure the ip's are within the range all the DNS servers are correct? You are manually setting all of them right?

Was that you I copied it off of? =]

Yes sorry. Second desktop, family workstation, other desktop, cannot connect to the internet - all the same. I'll go edit my post, it's the HP one.

About the IPs range and DNS servers, I'm not exactly sure what you're saying. What is the DNS Server supposed to be? On this Gateway [connected fine] it says the DNS server is the address of the router.

I haven't manually set the addresses, the router assigns IPs by itself but they are all xx.100-xx.108. The computers all say their respective .101, .102, etc.

:) No problem on the sig.

Well, as far as DNS, it seems like you are setting them to automatically detect it's own settings. If you can, you should try to manually set each computer and give it it's own ip so it's always constant, and not changing.

Additionally, there are many factors that can contribute to the low signal. Such as how far away the HP is, the wall materials, first or second floor, etc. Also, did you check for the latest driver for your Linksys PCI card? A driver update might of solved a connection issue if it was present.
