usb and sd reader

Hi, I have a Sony Vaio netbook, for some reason unknown to me the usb and sd card reader on the netbook have suddenly stopped working which is very frustrating when I want to transfer a file to the desktop computer, has anyone had this problem, anyone know how to rectify it?

It still could be jon, just because they are no warning triangles in device manager does not mean there is not problem.

Before you go looking at actual faulty hardware, it`s certainly worth downloading the most updated drivers for your usb and card reader.

hmm, still didn't work. I would as a last resort format but that would mean losing data that I need as obviously I can't back up my files with no usb, sd reader or cd drive, been wanting to get xp on here anyway because windows 7 starter on a netbook with 1.6ghz cpu and 1gb ram is ridiculous

If you are really pushed and the data is important, you could remove the drive from the laptop and connect to another machine to get data off.

Do you not have a seperate partion for files ?

there were only the partitions for recover but that is an excellent idea, can't believe I didn't think of it already, I just created a small partition, there aren't any big files just pictures and video's of the kids I don't want to lose so i'm going to back up and format now. Cheers for the advice, going to try now

formatted c drive and re-installed windows and it still didn't work. Seems strange to me though that all 3 usb ports and the sd reader would all die if it is not repairable

It is very unusual, if you cleanly installed windows and reinstalled the drivers and it still is not working, you could be looking at a more serious hardware fault.

Have you tried resetting your bios to default just in case there is a setting in there that has disabled them.

it did cross my mind that when a while ago I changed something in bios to try and get it to boot from sd to get xp on which was a massive failure but I dismissed the idea, it doesn't seem to have many options to be fair though. I shall have a look though

Just look for a setting with default settings, may say factory default or optimized settings etc, just select to load the default settings, then do not forget to press f10 to save and exit, if you don`t save the change it won`t work.

Then reboot and check, usb ports first.

cheers for the reply, just tried restoring to default, it was optimized defaults but unfortunately it still didn't work, I know it was working no more than a week ago, I am completely out of idea's. I suppose they must just be broken, I have never had my usb or card reader fail in any of my computers before so quite shocked but thanks for trying to help

I just tried a usb storage device on the netbook and the found new hardware message in the corner popped up, yet it still wont shows up to view files.
