What do you do with unused hardware

After upgrading a computer with the latest and greatest, what do you do with your leftover hardware? Do you simply put it in a bin and dont use it, do you start work on a new system, or do you trash it. I would like to hear your responses

Put it away in a box, Mattman. It comes in handy for troubleshooting. As soon as you throw it away you'll need it.

Keep it, unless its worth something.. sell it. Sometimes its worth more to just keep as "backup" or for testing, repairing old systems ect.

Generally what I do here when going to build new case is simply use the last to upgrade a family member running a lesser machine or pass it along to a friend's kids for student educational purposes seeing the old stuff put to use. A simple upgrade of a hardware will see the first set aside as suggested earlier as spares in case something new goes doa on you.

That can bail you out fast between waiting for a return/exchange/refund or when not having the mula to run out to replace something in a hurry. "whew!" :o as the sweat is wiped away you are still running thanks to having been foresighted enough to set something aside for just these situations.

I never throw stuff away. I work on these computers all the time. Never know when i will need something. I dont keep like 32 mb of ram and so on.

Keep them, use them. I had a near-10 years old P3 machine sitting in the closet, then my main rig blew up, instead of having to revert back to stone age and not get the internet all I did was to pull out teh oldie and install Linux. This temp solution was a lifesaver... not to mention that I think my mum's really beginning to like Linux now. I have another old piece-of-sh...*ahem*outdated hardware*cough* that I jusst fixed up, gonna install 98SE and see if I can hook it up to our network for some "serious" LAN caming with my brothers. If it doesn't work out, I'm installing a Linux distro and -fanfare- we've got another backup rig ready to go in case something fails again.

Obsolete hardware FTW! (that being all I can afford :()

Also... as soon as you throw it away, you'll need it anyways, so...

I simply tossed the old memory here lately when catching a deal on larger dimm into a drawer. I first ran memtest before swapping those out for the new then ran it again once the new memory was in. I need to replace the new memory or find another board for upgrading another build somewhat that old memory will simply find a new home.

When I got my 9600GSO, I took my x1650 to work. We'll sell it eventually when someone needs a mid-range gaming card, and I suppose thats what I'll do when I build a new machine.

I know someone here that could use a good AGP card and a new monitor. His crt has ripples at the top and the fan finally let go on one of the old cards I was able to "loan out" to him since it was still hanging around doing nothing.

Hey at least the card was there to loan out since that bailed him out for awhile! :P

thanks for all your responses! sorry I wasn't able to respond, got caught up in something on WoW Last night
