i have just bought this rig,

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 939
Motherboard - DFI Lan Party nF4 SLI-DR Expert 939
Ram - Corsair TWINX 3200C2 1024Mb/1Gb KIT (2x512Mb)

what would be the best GFX card to go along with it, i was thinking about a X800XT, is this a good choice, or is there something better out there?

thanks

what nvidia card is equal to the ATI X800XT?

aslo, with SLI, if you have 2 of the same gfx cards, say you have 2 X 256mb cards, does this mean that you have 512mb video card?

am i better off gettin a X800XT or gettin a nvidia SLI setup?
Generally no. Sli only gives a 20% to 30% increase in performance and right now it is not needed. The best option right now would to get one high end card instead of two "average" ones.

yeah but should i get the X800XT or get a nvidia card so that later on i just have to buy one more instead of two, the mobo im using is DFI lanparty SLI expert.

I reccomend the X800XT, because, even though the 7600GT has a higher core clock, and a higher memory clock, it has a limited 128-bit memory bus. The X800XT has a 256 bit bus, and in the end, I believe this card will push out more performance because of this reason. As you also mentioned about memory on the card. It's not always beneficial, while this may not be true about 256mb vs 512mb in todays world, I know that back when 256 first was available in the FX/9000 series of cards, many hardcore users stuck to 128 because it was faster, remember, numbers don't always=performance.

can the X800XT be overclocked?

Yes, any card can be overclocked, just some are not as good overclockers as other. I am not sure, but I think the X800XT has unlockable pipelines.

A nice gfx card for your budget would be a 7800 GT. It is only about 240$ and isnt that much slower than the GTX. and also down the road since your mobo is SLI compatible you could add another one if you need to. It is about 250$ on compusa.com but it is sold out there.

Do you mean the 7900gt? Because the 7900gt will perform better than the 7800gt and it is about the same price.

He's talking about AUD, a 7800 or 7900 is well outside budget.

A 7600GT would easily outperform an X800XT, and generally also beats out an X850XT. IMO, it's your best choice with this budget.

For the best Australian prices, try http://www.staticice.com.au/

However, if you had the money to create a crossfire setup that would give you 70%-80% increases in performance but that amounts to quite a bit more money because you have to have good cooling and a good power supply

An x850xt would be a good option too and with my experience a x850xt and 7600gt are fairly close in performance. The real difference is in your other parts to determine the better of the two.

Although, keep in mind that you can't overclock a video card if you put it in a factory computer (just for other people watching this out there)

i bought a X800XT, cant wait to get it running. is the stock fan on it decent or should i look at upgrading it? if so what to?
