What was your worst ever computer accident?

Oh I remember mine quite well. My computer wouldn't turn on and I slid the red switch on the PSU and then it turned on. Sadly after 8 seconds of thinking all the smoke was just dust I realized my computer was on fire!!!!...........Yeah, on fire. I quickly flipped the emergency shut off switch and that was that. So much for resurrecting a 4 year old computer that hasn't been used in 3 years strait...............................Any way, what was YOUR worst computer accident??????
 
Probably the worst thing that happened to me was when I tried overclocking my PD930 to 4Ghz, and then it wouldnt post even after resetting the CMOS jumper. I finally got it to work though.
 
On my older computer which i cant remember the specs of! I think it had a crappy Cyrix processor:P Anyway we moved house and on the day we moved in i set my computer back up in my new room and switched it on and Bang!

The Psu had blew and the smell of electrical burning:D

I looked at the back of the Psu where the power cable goes in and the Voltages witch was on a lower power setting...

This one im taliking about....

I dont know how the hell the switch got moved over but somehow it did:confused: I didnt do it:D

Anyhow i replaced the Psu and it didnt take anything else with it.

It crapped me up when it banged:D
 
Probably having the side of my box off, dislodging a loose SATA cable from my Raid0 array, and losing nearly 400GB of data and coursework.
 
did some work with a company called vanitec about ten+ years ago, they built custom computers for business and industry

A lot of these systems were fairly robust bulky ones

Wwell we ahd a power supply for one return and these were fairly expensive so we needed to try and repair it.

After much messing about we decided it was time to test, we knew it might be dodgy so we plugged it in in a different room so we could hide round the corner and just flick the on switch on the power outlet.

As soon as we did a huge bang followed and lots of smoke, went into the other room to see that the top metal section of the PSU had been ripped clean off and was now buried a good solid inch into the ceiling :D

Just glad i wasnt looking over it as it was swtiched on. I believe the plate is still in place today as a reminder as to what dangers can be had messing with a psu :)

As a helpful reminder to those who may share our similar fate, never try to put out a computer fire with water............or a fire extinguisher........or Gatorade....

Edit: Oh yeah, and screaming "OH God no! Please God no!!!!" Wont help either.....I tried......
 
Probably pulling my brand new AMD Athlon XP-M 2600+ out of the package, and flattening one of the pins.

20mins later, with alot of sweat and a pair of tweezers and a toothpick...it straightened out and worked fine.
 
This thread is going to be one of the funniest topics yet. I can smell it....along with the other burning computers.....Anyone ever had a laptop explode??? I heard that's happening now due to the batteries getting small with increased capacity if you know what I mean.
 
rememeber building a computer at that same place, vanitec. We had a rush order on for a "super computer" (well most powerful one we could make at the time)

Thing was we were out of CPU's and needed one fast. So we nicked on from the Manging directors PC (we had his permission)

The CPU in question was a 476 DX2 66mhz, and for those that know when they were first released they were damn expensive!

So I ran downstairs to pass it to the engineer and as i did so i managed to electrocute him slightly....both stood in shock. Obviously we had just sent a static shock through the CPU to eachother....suffice to say the chip was dead!
 
Money loss wise, the time when I went after a screw and ended up frying something on my stock Compaq mobo.... Nothing could beat the slightly burnt smell coming from it......

Another, although I didn't lose any money off of it, I accidently bent some of my CPU pins just after I replaced the fried mobo.........

Were there such things as ESD bands back then? Being 90+ years old takes a toll on the brain you know. Autopsy kinda looks like Swiss cheese you know. :D lol :P ;) :rolleyes:
 
lol yeah we did have the bands etc but i was passing the CPU over to the guy outside the workshop, we were in such a rush for it all there wasnt even a thought, just a short shock and we stood there staring at each other for a couple of minutes, both knowing exactly what had just happened

Were you on a rug? Rubber perhaps??? And do you think an ESD carpet would be a wise choice for someone like me who tinkers around in the computer?
 
you fine at home, just touch a radiator or something to ground yourself before hand, never had an issue meself

but at that place i had come down about three flights o stairs so charged meself up proper :P
