Whats quicker (laptop/desktop)...?

Just out of interest, what will be quicker:

1. Laptop - 1.6Mhz Centrino Duo, 2gb RAM, 40gb hard drive, Windows XP, with a load of stuff installed on it (Office 2007, CAD programs and general clutter).

2. Desktop (yet to be built, hence I am asking) - Celeron 2.4Ghz, 512Gb RAM, 13Gb hardrive, Ubuntu, minimal software (surfing, PLAYING music etc).

I'm interested to hear your thoughts, I got the desktop (recycled and a couple of new bits), to play around with Linux, maybe I will upgrade it (more RAM, hard drive, and it has a P4 compatible mobo) if I like and money allows.

Thanks, Doug.

Well. If you sorted out your laptop and un-installed a bunch of programmes I think it would run a bunch faster. Defraggedmented it and ran anti-malware programmes has the potential to be ok.

OK, I was just wondering.

I know the laptop has better spec's. It's about 2 1/2 years old Skyliner.

Dylan, the laptop has the bare minimums that I need on it, but a lot of the programs I use come with license servers and other crap that HAVE to be running in the background. I'm really careful about virus' and spyware etc so thats not a prob with it and I defrag it every couple of months.

I got the desktop uber cheap so I was planning on using it as quick-start-up-and-get-surfing machine as opposed to the 5 minutes it takes my laptop to get going.

Cheers guys! Doug
