Why is my PC video game freezing all of a sudden?

I have been playing Grand Theft Auto 4 now for about a week with a few small freezes here and there, and now all of a sudden, the freezes are huge to the point of the game being unplayable. What could have possibly happened overnight to have caused this change? I ran the experience index - same as before - graphics and processing have the same score.

Please help!

get a program

get a program like cpuid hwmonitor to check cpu temperatures sometimes if the cpu overheating it locks up it was happenning to me awhile back so i had to get a new heatsink fan and it helped and i dont freeze like that i only froze one time but i think it was cuz the game i was playing was having a minor issue

you already started this thread and got some responses. no need to start another one.

did you try any of the things suggested in the other thread?

Hi Everyone...my apologies for posting twice on this thread - mistake.

System specs:

Intel core quad q8300
6 GB RAM
1 TB HD
ATI Radeon 4670 1GB graphics card

I tried starting the task manager just before the game. Physical memory was at 19% when stopped immediately, history showed about the same level, never going above 25 % CPU usage shows up and down, about 60% was the max level.

I don't think temp is the problem. I started the game today immedately after the system was off for the night. Immediate freezes in the game. Also, when I was playing just 2 nights ago, I was playing for literally hours without any long pauses.

There is one thing I did notice 2 nights ago, and this may sound crazy: I was trying Sunday throughout the day with the same long freezes. Then I started a Bitcomet download, and the problem went away....the long freezes were gone. Sounds crazy, I know, but it's what happened. That being said, I 've tried running it with Bitcomet again in the background, and this time it did nothing.

Any other suggestions? Anyone who figures this one out should have a computer engineering degree because I've never seen anything like this....

Last point: What has been tried:
- defrag hd
-run registry cleaner
-lowering graphics settings to a minimum (still long freezes)

Benchmark was at 45% last time I checked.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I blame GTA IV. Go and get any updates for the game because it's extemely buggy and even more laggy without them.

One other point: I think the last post is right, it has to be the game. The only thing is: I tried to install the latest patch Sunday 1.07 and the game would not boot up. Any suggestions? Is there another patch version that would work?

SOLVED.

I installed a much earlier patch, version 1.0.2 and now the game works fine (I had intalled the latest patch, but it made the game unbootable). It just goes to show that its not always your system...

Thanks to all those for their feedback.
