win 7 installation wont complete

The laptop is Dell Inspirion 1525, a couple of years old.

This is my friends laptop and couple of days it just so happened not to boot, all of a sudden. He bought it to me, and it would go to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I kind of figured out it was not being able to get of OS for some reason.

I changed the BIOS settings, set CD as a primary drive, and tried with a repair CD. After couple of attempts of running the system repair, the computer seemed to have found it OS and it did boot. I tried starting on safe mode and it did started and I ran a disk clean while in there. Then the laptop froze. Now it simply wont boot, it will get up to windows starting up but wont boot. Even after the countless attempts of start up repair, no progress. So, I decided to wipe out everything, on friends approval, and install a fresh copy of OS.

I started with VISTA, and the two other CDs of win 7, which works fine on other computers. Every time I boot from CD, it will get me to the installation screen, it will copy files, and completes may be 3 or 4 processes of that installation. Then without having me set up an account or anything it restarts. There upon it tries to boot from incomplete installation and consequently gives some dll file missing message, as expected. I have tried this multiple times, and every time it is a different file missing.

I thought if computer had something wrong with the power supply and could not stay up till the installation was competed, but without running the installation process this laptop stays up all night. Its proving to be very challenging to me know and for all the time I have spent on this machine, I want to get this fixed. Please throw in your suggestion, assumption, and possible work around.

I am thinking if there is a problem with the hard drive itself? I tired installing ubuntu, for which the installation completed, but upon starting said something like Kernel Panic! I even tried downloading missing dll files and copy it into windows folder while starting the comp with a live CD, but it did not helped.

Is there anyway I could get this machine to start up again!? If its a hardware problem then very unlikely to get this fixed, but how do I go on about being sure its a hardware issue not OS. The main prob is it wont complete the installation process, and when i try reinstalling its the same thing. Please help and thanks in advance.

This either could be bad memory or failing hard drive. Download and make a memtest cd and boot to it to test the ram. Then download the hard drive makers disk diagnostic and make a bootable cd and run the extended test.

Tried the mem test, it came clean. Do not know what drive is in the laptop so havent done the hard drive diagnosis yet. It looks to be a problem with the hard drive, just an assumption from the series of events though. None of the installation being completed, even ubuntu installation failing. I am planning of something like booting from another hard-drive. Any chances of getting the existing hard drive fixed if I get into windows using another hard drive?

Can you boot to the bios and see if it lists a model number for the hard drive? If not, you'll have to open the bottom compartment and take the drive out to see what brand it is.

Well I did do the hard drive diagnostic with a built in diagnostic software i believe. I hit f12 multiple times right after restart it would give me an option to diagnose the hard drive. Yep it looked like the problem is with the hard drive itself, upon testing, which took quite sometime, returned an error code 0142. Tried chasing that error code and turned out its an indication of faulty hard drive :( now will try to work on replacing it.. thanks for your help, may be there isn't anything we could do when the hard drive itself is damage, or is there something that you might know that would be able to fix the error.
