im trying to format my hardrive thru format c in dos. But it said cannot lock the drive. Drive in use. What should i do next? BTW how do i boot up from dos in winxp thanks

Are you trying to format the disk while WinXP is running? If you want to reload WinXP, then just boot from the CD... you'll be able to change partitions and format from there. If you want to install a different OS, then boot from either a DOS/Win9X boot floppy, or the OS you're trying to install.
