i'm planning on getting a wired internet access to my sister's computer.
but i am clueless of how it works.

but the thing is, there is so much selections of routers available.
i am so puzzled which to pick.
can anyone help me with this.
thanks in advance.

If you're going to limit yourself to a wired router, most any should work just fine. I might stick with more popular brands(Dlink, Linksys, Netgear, etc) but any should do the job. However, you might want to consider getting a wireless router... They aren't much more expensive but have many more features. Plus, you could get one compatible with DD-WRT which is a much better firmware than many routers come preloaded with.

If you still can't decide on a router, just go to newegg and search their routers sorted by Highest Rating. See which router most people go with.

you should think about getting a wireless/LAN router i would go linksys ive used it forever and it would be better to think ahead you may get another laptop and want to take it throughout the house and if you get the wrt54g its around $50 and you can find it at any local store office depot etc and walmart even has it and you CAN turn off the wireless because i know you said you r going ethernet LAN youll want to turn it off so some click happy neighbor doesnt connect to your network its just something to think about

For a very basic network you need a modem, a router, a cat5/e/6/ethernet cable and a network interface card. Your isp should supply the modem, and any wired or wireless router will do, go and buy a ethernet cable and then get a very basic network card.
